At just 22 years old, Nicolás Otero left behind an extraordinary gift of hope. Through his family's courageous decision, six people received a second chance at life.

Pablo Iparraguirre's voice trembles, but his resolve remains steady. He speaks for the first time since that early morning of November 17th, when his nephew Nicolás Otero's life was forever changed. Nico was only 22 years old—healthy, strong, and endlessly compassionate. Returning from his job at the barbershop, after visiting his spiritual home at Cristo Power Church, he was heading home on his motorcycle when the incident occurred at the intersection of Entre Ríos and Rawson in Trelew.

"Nicolás was a young man without bad habits, hardworking. He worked two shifts at the barbershop, and in his free time he cut hair for people at their homes," Pablo remembers. "Then he'd go to church. He preached, shared the word, helped anyone in need. That was Nico."

Following the accident, Nicolás was admitted to Trelew's Regional Hospital. "Those were twelve endless days. We all waited for the doctors to come out announcing improvement. But it never came," his uncle recounts. On the sixth day, specialists informed them that his brain wasn't responding. They later confirmed the devastating diagnosis: irreversible brain inactivity.

"It was crushing," Pablo expresses. "I told my sister Noelia, and the doctors explained the donation protocol. They informed us that Nicolás was a candidate. My sister and his father Esteban made the decision. It was an extraordinary act."

The decision was not impulsive—it reflected who Nicolás had been. "He helped everyone, constantly. He was kind, he was light. My sister said, 'It's what Nico would have wanted.' And I thought exactly the same."

The family had to wait nearly two more days for the hospital to complete all the procedures required for a multi-organ donation. "The doctors told us that if we didn't donate, life support would end in 30 minutes and everything would be over. But my sister decided to wait. Because of that, six people received an opportunity to live."

Pablo pauses. He breathes. "It's not consolation, but it's peace of mind. While we waited for a miracle that never came, in other hospitals families were waiting for one that did arrive thanks to Nico."

The following weekend, the family received a tribute during a sports championship in 28 de Julio, organized to raise awareness about organ donation. "We didn't expect it. Jorge Ávila invited us and they treated us with enormous warmth. It was very symbolic. Nico deserves to be remembered."

But reality weighs heavily: the household that Nicolás supported faces critical hardship now. "My sister doesn't have formal employment, and Nicolás helped with everything. Bills keep coming. We're all supporting each other, but we need authorities to listen to our situation."

Pablo is firm: "What happened to Nicolás was not merely an accident. There are circumstances. And legal proceedings continue while those responsible remain free." His request is clear: "When the time comes to seek justice, I need society to stand with us."

Before concluding, Pablo shares a reflection carrying the weight of his experience. "My happiness is no longer complete. I miss Nico. But I want to raise awareness: organ donation saves lives. Our country ranks very low in these statistics."

"To the family and friends who stood by us during that waiting period. To Trelew Regional Hospital, to intensive care, to the police and GRIM team who protected the organs until the airport. To Cristo Power Church, for so much love. And to Jorge Ávila, who made this tribute possible," he concluded with profound gratitude.
