Descubren por quƩ los gatos manipulan mejor a las mujeres que a los hombres

A fascinating study reveals that domestic cats are master manipulators who have perfected techniques to get exactly what they want from their owners. Women appear more susceptible to their charm for an evolutionary reason.

Remember that iconic scene from Shrek 2 where Puss in Boots wins over the ogre with those adorable eyes? It turns out this fictional moment isn't far from reality. Research published in Behavioural Processes confirms that domestic cats are true masters of persuasion, having refined sophisticated strategies to get exactly what they desire from their caregivers.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Vienna, examined interactions between 41 cats and their owners over extended periods. The findings were striking: these animals don't just influence their owners—they do so strategically and with remarkable effectiveness.

To understand these discoveries better, Dr. Claudia Edwards PatiƱo, a specialist in Bioethics and Animal Science at UNAM's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, explained that while cats are indeed exceptional at getting their way, one myth deserves correction: the idea that they ask for everything without giving anything in return is completely false.

Perhaps most intriguingly, the study found that cats have figured out they can more easily influence female owners. According to Edwards PatiƱo, this is because a cat's meow bears a striking resemblance to human infant cries. Women, due to evolutionary reasons tied to maternal instinct, have a lower threshold for responding to these sounds, making them more likely to respond immediately.

Additionally, since women typically serve as primary caregivers in households, cats develop stronger bonds with them, making them easier targets for persuasion tactics.

This remarkable ability didn't develop overnight. Since ancient Egypt, cats have lived alongside humans, initially in a mutually beneficial relationship where they hunted rodents near human settlements. Over time, this coexistence evolved into a more complex and emotionally rich relationship.

Their most common strategies include strategic purring, intense eye contact, and positioning themselves in high-traffic areas like the kitchen, workspace, or bedroom. The FMVZ expert recommends establishing clear boundaries for healthy cohabitation, while acknowledging that cats are typically the true rulers of their homes.

Despite their persuasive nature, Edwards PatiƱo emphasizes that living with these feline companions offers numerous benefits and suggests everyone should consider welcoming one into their home when circumstances allow. Cats are beings that offer genuine, heartfelt affection and companionship.
