Compartir esta nota por WhatsAppStories of extraordinary longevity inspire wonder, but few compare to that of Marcelino Abad Tolentino, affectionately known as don 'Mashico'. This Huanuco resident has just celebrated his 125th birthday, becoming Peru's oldest documented person and possibly the world's eldest. With his warm smile, cherished coca leaves, and signature hat, don Marcelino welcomed another year of life—a testament to resilience and grace.
According to his official identity documents, he was born on April 5, 1900, making him a living witness to two World Wars, multiple pandemics, and more than a century of profound historical transformation. His journey through time is as remarkable as the years themselves.
Don 'Mashico's life story is truly extraordinary. He lost both parents at just seven years old when they tragically passed away in a river incident. Without access to formal education, he learned to survive through hard work from an early age. He never married or had children, instead dedicating his entire life to the land he cultivated with care.

For over a hundred years, he lived in peaceful solitude in a remote area of Cormilla, in Chaglla district, Pachitea province. His humble home, built from remnants of an old coffee plantation, became his sanctuary. There he grew oranges, bananas, and avocados while raising farm animals. He cooked over wood fires and drew water from the nearby Huallaga River—living in harmony with nature.
It wasn't until 2019 that promoter Misael Fabián from the Huánuco Territorial Unit of the Pensión 65 program discovered him after an arduous six-hour journey by land and an additional hour-and-a-half hike. This encounter on February 7, 2019, changed don Marcelino's life, leading to his enrollment in the government's social care program that April.
At 119, he obtained his first official identity document with assistance from Peru's civil registry. At 124, he received his electronic ID. Today, don Marcelino resides at the 'Mis abuelitos' care home in Ambo province, where he receives compassionate support and celebrated his 125th birthday surrounded by warmth, joy, and heartfelt congratulations from those who cherish him.
